Flag by Jasper Johns

Flag (Moratorium), 1930
Look at the white dot on the middle of the painting for 30 secs, then look at the white screen under this.

Instructions:
1. Focus on the small white square in the middle of the picture for about 15 seconds (ignore the moving circle). Try not to blink. Then look at a white screen under the picture. You should see colors. What colors do you see?
2. Try the experiment again, except this time move your eyes to follow the little circle. After following the circle for 15 seconds, look at the white screen under the picture. Do you still see the colors?

What's Happening:
In the retina of your eyes, there are 3 types of color receptors (cones) that are most sensitive to either red, blue or green. When you stare at a particular color for too long, these receptors get "tired" or "fatigued." When you then look at the white background, the receptors that are tired do not work as well. Therefore, the information from all of the different color receptors is not in balance and you see the color "afterimages." You can see that you vision quickly returns to normal.
In the second experiment when you follow the moving circle, your eyes are always moving. Therefore, you do not give a particular color the chance to tire your receptors.

Virtually Mine / exploring how we value the objects in our life

CITIZEN:Citizen's Virtually Mine online exhibit started at a gallery event where attendees brought with them objects of personal significance. Along with specific descriptions from each owner, the items were photographed, tagged, and archived and the project was born. The Virtually Mine site gives a peek into the way many different people value the objects in their lives. [via core77]

The Affective Sustainability of Objects by Kristina Borjesson
How objects retain their significance over time and in a changing human context. Is the affective an important but missing link in the ongoing efforts towards improved sustainability of objects? Although being it, is affective sustainability subjective and therefore difficult to consider by design?
"My vision is to help designers look for the obvious when designing. It might be immediately hidden, but when it is found, it shows the way to simplification." - Kristina Borjesson
It's one of the most exciting workshop I attended this term.

Mind Chair by Peter Marigold and Beta Tank

Mind Chair - a collaborative interactive furniture design with Beta Tank
The electronic unit sits as a retrofitted parasite within an existing and very familiar design describing how a technology that is both simple yet astonishing in its effect, could be incorporated into something as ubiquitous as a piece of institutional furniture. The familiarity of the assemblage leads to a guessing game as to how the device might be used in a simple alternative teaching environment.

Mr. Jones Watches by Crispin Jones

Right or Wrong provides a moral traffic lights - as the seconds turn there is an animated colour change on the dial from red to blue-green. In a moment of doubt (do I really have to leave now? Is there time for one more drink?) the wearer can look at the watch for guidance. In extreme cases one can pop out the winding crown which will stop the mechanism on an answer - giving no scope for cheating (well you can always play 'best-of-three' if you don't get the answer you want first time!)

The Mantra alternates a very positive statement (e.g. "you are amazing") with a very negative one (e.g. "nobody likes you").
The Mantra makes the arrogant person more humble and makes the humble more confident.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...by Robert Stadler

Carole
Mirror oracle / Karriere Bar 2007
The mirror Carole proposes aphorismes and proverbs as answers to the spectators questions.
These random chosen sentences aren't personalized, but their enigmatic and universal character makes the persons imagine the link to their interrogation themselves.

Identity Mirror by Hugo Liu

identity mirror (2005)
identity performance - see who you are, not what you look like.
Identity mirror reifies its metaphors in the workings of an ordinary mirror. When the viewer is distant from the object, a question mark is the only keyword painted over his face. As he approaches to a medium distance, larger font sized identity keywords such as "fitness buffs", "fashionistas", and "book lovers" identify him. Approaching further, his favorite book, film, and music genres are seen. Closer yet, his favorite authors, musicians, and auteurs are known, and finally, standing up close, the songs, movies, and book titles become visible.

Decision-makers Seek Internal Balance, Not Balanced Alternatives
"This is a state of dynamic equilibrium, much like controlling body temperature," said Paulus. "How humans select a particular course of action may be in response to raising or lowering that 'set point' back to their individual comfort zone. In people with psychiatric disorders or addictions, the thermostat may be broken."

Mind-wandering

Michael Kane, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, sampled the thoughts of students at eight random times a day for a week. He found that on average, they were not thinking about what they were doing 30 percent of the time.
For some students it was between 80 and 90 percent of the time. Out of the 126 participants, only one denied any mind-wandering at the sampled moments.
Prior work has also turned up average rates of 30 percent to 40 percent in everyday life.

Idea Generator

Need ideas? check this www.tdbspecialprojects.com.
It's like a random TRIZ and gives you imaginations and directions to approach something you want to know or explain. However, how to explain and generate these 3 random words into ideas are based on different people's minds. Therefore, even people get the same words, the explanations they come out would be different. It's a subliminal way to guide/ lead people's thoughts.

Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert

or on TED,
TED.com
"psychological immune system"
A system of unconscious processes that help people change their view of the world, so that people can feel better about the world in which they find themselves.
I am more interested in this part of his point, about happiness and choice.
Ability of changing your mind is the friend of natural happiness,
but freedom to choice is the enemy of synthetic happiness.

Generator by Chris Hand

When I first started working on my unit 3 project, this work influenced me quite a lot. After users press the button, 3 random matched words come out. Unconsciously, users start to generate these 3 words in their mind and create a connection between these words.
I am fascinated this process, the generator doesn't tell people what is the answer but it gives them a way to find out or an illusion or a dream. Even the same 3 words read by different people, they will come out different conclusions.
Tricky but clever, I love it!

nothing

Did you say nothing?
When you were asked what you wanted for
Birthday, Anniversary, Graduation or Christmas.
Don't you remember saying NOTHING
Well this time someone heard you, searched
high and low and found this perfect gift for you.
Such a tricky gift.
Maybe there is a gift called "anything" as well.
Sometimes, I think saying anything or whatever is a irresponsible answer.
We can explain it in a good way, the person is easy going and following every choice other people made.
In the opposite way, the person puts his responsibilities to others. The others may feel pressure about it, coz suddenly his decision affects two people.

I wish this a real medicine, but it is not unfortunately.
Last March, I went to Copenhagen and bought it from Flow Market.
